Thirteen-year-old Esther had also spent a sleepless night cowering on the floor in her room. But morning brought clarity. She had to take down the sukkah. With her parents away, it had remained on the roof of the house. Now she was afraid that if its flammable material caught fire, it would set their entire house alight.

The roof was a shared space with the family who lived next door. As Esther climbed the access stairs to the roof, she met the fifteen-year-old son of her neighbours. He tugged on her arm and tried to stop her.

‘Don’t,’ he said. ‘It’s too dangerous for you.’

‘I have to. What if the sukkah catches fire?’

He pushed past her. ‘Then let me go.’

She followed on his heels. ‘No. I can do it!’

Her chivalrous neighbour was first onto the rooftop. As she emerged behind him there was a crack, then a thud. Dread squeezed the air from her chest and throttled her scream. She stared agape at the fifteen-year-old boy at her feet. He’d been shot dead. She stumbled back, slipping down the stairs with the image of his stunned expression, frozen on his face, burning into her mind where it would stay forever.
